Swimmer, their latest release, arrives after 2017’s double dose of LP Yours Conditionally and EP We Can Die Happy, making it the third release on their own record label, Mutually Detrimental. If you thought they were merely two privileged kids writing songs, you’d quickly be proven mistaken. The mythos around Cape Dory - the album was written about and while the two sailed along the Atlantic seaboard, as if The Captain and Tennille owned an actual boat - could have put them into the filing bin with all the other 2010s artists perceived to have a gimmick, but Tennis moved past their origin story and matured their sound with each record. 60s surf pop, 50s girl groups, and the yacht-rock of the 70s weave in and out to create the Tennis sound, a warm hug of familiar music that wouldn’t sound out of place on AM radio. ![]() Since their debut, 2011’s Cape Dory, they have mined the sounds of the past to inform their present. ![]() Tennis is the musical duo and married couple Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley.
